For over 5,000 years, billions of people have turned to acupuncture for everything from pain management to holistic health maintenance. Drawing on the principles of Chinese medicine , acupuncture is an integrated health care system. It’s completely natural, drug-free, and safe. The goal is always to activate the body’s own abilities to heal and grow stronger.
Acupuncture works by activating and manipulating the body’s internal source of energy, called Qi. Acupuncture practitioners believe that this energy is the same energy that Einstein showed exists throughout the universe. It’s been called by many names: vital force, spirit, wakan, ether, prana, and many others. Qi exists in all living things, and it’s what gives us the power to get through our days and regulate our internal body systems (growth, immune function, body temperature, etc.).
We believe that Qi flows through the body in river-like channels called meridians. However, when these meridians are blocked or disrupted, Qi cannot properly nourish the body and mind. The body might begin to experience the symptoms of ill health.
The goal of the acupuncturist, then, is to understand how Qi flows through the meridians, properly diagnose any difficulties, and work with the patient to resolve them. Once Qi can flow freely, symptoms should dissipate and the patient should return to good health. If you're seeking acupuncture for pain management, anxiety, back pain, or more, we have the experience and treatment options to help you. Yes! Acupuncture does not use drugs or surgery, and thus carries none of their risks. As for the needles themselves, the FDA approved acupuncture needles for use in 1996. Under their guidelines, licensed acupuncturists must use only nontoxic, sterile needles that are labelled for single use only.
Most people associate needles with hypodermic syringes. Those often hurt, so many assume acupuncture will, too. However, acupuncture needles are slightly larger than 1/10 the size of the average hypodermic needle – about the size of a cat’s whisker. Thin and flexible, they cause practically no pain going in or coming out. In fact, many patients report tingling sensations, a sense of fullness, or deep relaxation, not pain. These are all good signs that suggest the acupuncture treatment is working.
In the United States, there are over 65 schools and colleges teaching acupuncture, and the practice is regulated by 42 states. Most acupuncturists receive 3-4 years of education, which includes an internship.
This varies from patient to patient. Depending on the length of time you’ve been experiencing your condition and how you respond, your treatment time may be shorter or longer. (As a general rule, chronic conditions take longer to respond, while acute ones respond more quickly.) Usually, a 4-10 week treatment plan is created for the initial treatment phase.
Neurotransmitter theory, autonomic nervous system theory, gate control theory, vascular-interstitial theory, and blood chemistry theory have all been proposed to scientifically explain the workings of acupuncture.
Just ask us! We are always happy to answer questions and help patients fully understand the acupuncture treatment they are about to receive.
